Last week ended on a very high note. The world watched as His Royal Highness Prince Harry married the love of his life, Meghan Markle, and together they became Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
This wedding was considered a major turning point for both the British Monarchy and the British People. It was both a joyous occasion and an opportunity for the haters to voice their opinions.
Just imagine, the British Royalty marrying a commoner (horror), not only a commoner but an American. Not only an American, but someone who has been divorced. And horror of horrors, a
person of mixed blood!!
The paparazzi went wild! Digging up any dirt they could find on her and her family. Her father seen in unflattering photos and having a heart-attack, preventing him from walking his daughter down the aisle. Markle’s half-sister criticizing both the paparazzi and the Royal Family for their responses to the wedding. Markle’s brother angry about wedding. Facebook carrying pictures of multiracial children proclaiming that, that is what Prince Philip's great grandchildren will look like. People posting snide remarks about the cost of the wedding and how much the British taxpayer would have to pick up. Even Psychics who declared that “Princess Diana would not have approved and that she thinks it will not last”. Wasn’t Princess Diana divorced from the monarchy? However, through it all, Prince Harry and Meghan looked into each other eyes and let their love shine through.
Even if this fairy tale wedding does not last, it gave the people of the world hope. For a few hours people were able to sit back and watch it unfold and believe that fairy tales do come true.
On a more practical note, this marriage provides a bigger, stronger bond between the American people and the British people. Since the election of President Trump, this bond, that saw the two countries through 2 world wars, have been strained.
Harry and Meghan have done more for the world in creating a connection between two countries than Trump has done in his 2? years of presidency. Has Trump even visited England yet? Recently, Donald Trump has cancelled a planned visit to the UK in February, where he had been expected to open a new $1bn (£738m) US embassy in London. On top of this, he has thrown away the Iran Deal of which Britain was a party to. He has threatened NATO’s stability and has generally proven himself to be an unreliable statesman friend. He seems to be better at breaking deals than seeing them to fulfillment. From previous comments, no one seems to believe that Donald Trump fits the role of a Nobel Peace Prize Winner, but my question is, does Donald Trump even have a plan to do something great for America? Or will he be another President Hoover?

Enjoyed reading your post Kayleigh! I feel that Donald Trump does a lot of talking but when it comes to making America great again he fails to follow through. I feel if he was going to make a positive difference for Americans he would have done it right away. As you’ve stated it has been two years and Trump has yet to make a move that would benefit the people before himself. It is sad that Harry and Meghan have done more for the world in creating a connection between two counties than Trump has done. This comparison should speak volumes of how we chose to elect a president that has very little to no interest to bring people together for the greater good. A leader would put the needs of others before themselves and most certainly would not risk the lives of others in order to gain power.
ReplyDeleteThank you,

As far as I'm aware, Markle hasn't abused her newfound position to promote her clothing brand, so as far as I'm concerned she's quite a bit above Trump's wife, who, you know, has done that.
ReplyDeleteI think in his head, America = Trump, and therefore everything he does is something great for America. He may truly think he's living up to his slogan, regardless of what America actually is.
I think the constant barrage of gossip circling this relationship and eventual wedding is just par for the course when dealing with social media. There is always a group of people that dig up dirt and try to take away from people's happiness. The story about Meghan's dad and extended family, didn't shine a bad light on her, it made her more relatable. We all have family issues we would hate to be broadcast across the nation, so I think people empathized with her. The monarchy embraced Meghan so openly because they are trying to make a shift to a more current way of life, so to open their family to a divorced, biracial, American is a good PR move for them.
ReplyDeleteKayleigh, I enjoyed reading this post as I knew they had had a couple roadblocks but I had no idea how many things they have had to deal with! At the end of the day I am glad that the royal family accepted Meghan for who she was no matter of whether she fits the “Royal image” of what a Duchess should be. It is unfortunate that they have had to deal with such haters and reporters digging up dirt on Meghan’s family, but at the end of the day that is sadly part of what comes with fame, as people will always try to tear you down. In the end, I am happy that the two of them are so very happy together as it is like a fairy tale with a happy ending, and of course regardless whether they are famous, they deserve to be happy! I also liked the comment you made at the end about the comparison to Trump’s contributions. I thought it was funny how you connected the royal wedding to a backhand at Trump’s ability to lead the country. Well done!
ReplyDeleteKayleigh, this post gives some helpful lists of media frenzy about this event. I wonder about the political effect of this use of public attention for a hereditary monarchy? How can this help to create change in US-British relations beyond shared attention to celebrity? The comparison with Trump is good and it would be interesting to hear more of that comparison
